The Song Dorag

It was just a normal day when Dorag started, sitting in class one day. But what she didn't know is that, the notes she took down in class would be the basis for a song. She went home that night and thought about what was said in class. When she finally finished her homework for the day, she then proceeded to make up words to go with the notes that were there.

Collaboration with Youth Station

Musician, Music Ama Ruller and Youth Station (YST) has put together a new music album titled Ama Ruller. The project was created to give Somali youth in the diaspora an opportunity to release their own voices and develop as artists.

Where did you get your talent from?

This is a very common question that musicians get. For many, the love for music comes from their family. From as early as they can remember, they were always hearing the sounds of music being played at home and there was always some type of instrument out on display. In this case, I know that is true for me. Both my parents are musically inclined and have been playing piano for about thirty years now.

Your experiences in Nigeria so far... What would you like to see change?

I believe one of the most important things that needs to change in Nigeria is its view on women. My work at Maiduguri University has taught me how strongly Nigerians society can reinforce this belief and lack of respect for women. I want my sisters and female friends back home to be able to realize their dreams, participate in society, receive an education and make a difference.

Do you plan on making music your career? If so what do you see yourself doing, and how do you see yourself being recognized for your work?

I plan on making music my career. I see myself being recognized for my work and also inspiring young people to go after their dreams as well. I will also release new music at least every two months and tour all over the world to perform.
